Fulfilling Ones Duties - Story of Shri Ashutosh Mukherjee

Shri Ashutosh Mukherjee was the chancellor of University of Calcutta in those days. At the same time, he was also the judge of Calcutta High Court. While he was at the top ranks of the top institutions of India, then under British rule, he was not influenced even slightly by the English culture. He used to regularly bath in the sacred river Ganga and perform all his dharmic duties.

One day he was returning after his dip in the Ganga. He had a towel on his shoulder and a pot (lota) filled with gangajal in his hand. On the road side he saw an old woman sitting dejected. On her face, grief and sadness were clearly visible.

'Mother! What's the matter? Why are you so sad?', Shri Mukherjee asked sympathetically. 'Son! Today I have to do the shraddh of my husband. Time is passing by. I have no brahmin who could help me to perform the rituals to satisfy my husband's soul,' replied the old lady explaining the cause of her sorrow.

For a moment, Ashutosh babu was silent thinking something in his mind and then he replied, "Let's go! I will help you in performing the rituals." They both went to the old lady's home. He performed all the rituals and after completion he was given as an honorarium one bowl full of rice and one - two bundles of jaggery. With these gifts he moved towards his home.

On the way, when people saw the justice with the pot of gangajal in one hand and bowl of rice and jaggery in the other, they all were very surprised. When one familiar person asked him with wonder, then Ashutosh babu replied seriously with pride, "What if I am the justice of Calcutta High Court! How could I abandon my brahmin skills and my duties. Helping that helpless lady, I have fulfilled my duty as a brahmin."
